Online high school education is a viable alternative for students who have problems adjusting to a traditional school environment. Some students have severe illnesses that cause them to miss long periods of time. Some have already begun careers and they are not able to come to school on a regular basis. Students who move frequently have difficulty adjusting to a traditional high school environment. And some students merely are scared to attend high school.

Fortunately, these students now have a chance at obtaining the schooling they deserve through a high school distance education program. When researching an online education high school, you'll normally find two options: charter schools and private schools.
A charter school is a joint public/private venture. Like public schools, they fall under the supervision of the community school district. They're funded by the government and must follow the regulations outlined by the respective state government. The price of attending charter schools generally is free to those living in the same state as the charter school. Students who live out of state can apply, but may or may not be accepted. If they are, they'll typically be mandated to cover tuition and other fees.

Different from public schools, private companies typically manage charter schools. These companies have more flexibility in deciding how the school will be set up and in laying out the coursework, but still must function inside the framework of the state's guidelines. Most charter-style distance education schools are accredited online education institutions.
If you understand how private schools function in general, you already know how a private distance learning high school runs. These schools are privately funded and privately run. The tuition charged to students is put towards operating the school. Since private schools obtain no public funding, school administrators are free to choose how the school is operated. Not all online distance education is accredited distance education and it's very important to investigate this before signing up. The simplest way is to verify with the regional accrediting bureau.
High school diplomas from non-accredited schools are sometimes viewed unfavorably by prospective employers and college admissions officers. Students with diplomas from non-accredited online high schools might find that they have to 'demonstrate' their knowledge by taking a sequence of assessments and tests. Interestingly, many colleges are now beginning their own online learning education programs, such as high school. Attendance at one of these schools guarantees there won't be an issue with the diploma when it comes time to apply to that particular school.
This sort of online continuing education can be helpful, especially for students who fall into one of the categories shown above. However, being ill or afraid or employed doesn't mean the student is a good applicant for high school distance learning. A student must be motivated and mature, must be able to work by themselves and not get distracted easily, and must be ready to miss out on the social portion of attending high school.
